In an interview with Italian daily La Repubblica, El Yazami stressed that Morocco played a "leading" role in the preparation and organization of the International Conference on Migration, which adopted in December 2018 the Marrakech Pact for Safe, Orderly and Secure Migration, which "constitutes to date the only international framework for migration governance."
"In view of His tireless efforts, HM King Mohammed VI was designated African leader on migration by the African Union summit, where the Sovereign presented a continental roadmap on this issue," recalled the CCME president, highlighting the "strategic" role of the African Union's African Migration Observatory, based in Rabat.
He also reviewed the relevant measures taken by the Kingdom at the national level, including the national strategy on immigration and asylum and two other bills on the issue.
"African leaders have obviously the duty to manage the movement of Africans on the continent and to provide a decent life for their citizens, but this does not exonerate the countries of the North from their responsibilities," he said.
He also considered that the discourse of European leaders and public policies at national and European level are focused primarily on the control of external borders with regard to migrants from the south.
To address the issues related to migration, "we must seek a shared international governance, based on respect for human rights and a common strategic vision of mutual interests," pleaded the Moroccan official.
Referring to the grouped assault against the metal fence in the province of Nador, El Yazami said that this attempt was condemned by Morocco, which continues to wage a relentless battle against trafficking networks.
This attempt of forcible entry, where 140 elements of the police force were injured to various degrees, was marked by the use of unprecedented violence by the candidates for illegal immigration against the elements of the forces of order, which acted with professionalism and respect for the laws and regulations.
