Seizing the political momentum of the Future Summit held during the high-level week of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, the ministers called for the implementation of the commitments made under the “Pact for the Future”, in particular those related to giving new impetus to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
They also stressed the need of reforming global governance to reflect current economic and social realities as well as for better representation of MICs in its decision-making mechanisms.
The ministers also called for the establishment of a fair, equitable and inclusive international financial architecture.
The Ministerial Declaration highlights the major challenges facing MICs, in particular those related to access to development finance, including concessional finance, climate finance and debt crisis relief.
In view of the 4th United Nations Conference on Financing for Development scheduled for next July in Seville, Spain, the ministers underlined that this conference is a springboard to better position MICs on financing issues, advance their socio-economic priorities and pave the way for the development of a strategic action programme dedicated to MIC countries.
They reiterated the Rabat call with a view to develop a UN inter-agency strategy to support the implementation of the SDGs in MICs and respond to their specific development needs.
The ministers welcomed the decision to establish a high-level independent group of experts to develop new approaches in order to measure progress that complement the GDP criterion.
They also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the MIC group as an intergovernmental platform for strategic dialogue, coordination and advocacy at the international level.
They welcomed the proposition of the Philippines to host, in the first half of 2025, the next Ministerial Conference of Middle-Income Countries, which will be an opportunity to consolidate the political momentum created by the Rabat Ministerial Conference.
