At a time when all the other 14 members of the UN Security Council have reiterated their support for the process led exclusively under the aegis of the Organization, as well as their support for the progress made towards a lasting political solution to the issue of the Moroccan Sahara, South Africa stuck to defending its ideological positions that have become obsolete and in complete contradiction with the realities on the ground and out of phase with the UN dynamics, wrote the Zimbabwean newspaper.
The daily exposed the collusion between South Africa and Algeria when it comes to the question of Morocco's territorial integrity. This attitude was revealed during the debate on the question of the Sahara, said the paper, noting that South Africa did not find better than repeating obsolete positions drawn from an ideological frame of reference which has no place in the contemporary world.
The Zimbabwean newspaper stressed that while South Africa is stubbornly clinging to its rigid positions, the UN Security Council continues to show a firm commitment to the search for a political solution that is realistic, practicable, sustainable and based on compromise to end the regional conflict over the territorial integrity of Morocco.
New Zimbabwe, which has dissected the inappropriate South African reaction, has shone the spotlight on Pretoria's allegations concerning the political process led by the United Nations and which, according to the South African delegation, is in a supposedly "impasse". On this aspect, the South African contradictions are blatant to say the least, the newspaper went on to say, stressing that the South African allegations raise many questions all the more since the other members of the UN decision-making body welcomed the new momentum given to the UN process by the two round tables organized in 2018 and 2019 with the participation of Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the "polisario".
In addition, these parties have decided to meet again in the same format, it said, stressing that the South African contradictions have been revealed at all levels, including the positions already taken by this same country.
It is regrettable to see South Africa forgetting or pretending to forget its vote, as a member of the Security Council for the period 2007-2008, in favor of Security Council resolutions 1754, 1783 and 1813. These same resolutions call on the parties to engage seriously in the process led by the United Nations with a view to reaching a political solution, while reaffirming the pre-eminence of the Moroccan autonomy initiative, described as serious and credible, the paper said.
As for the mandate of Minurso, the Zimbabwean portal noted that at a time when the Security Council resolutions clearly limit the mandate of the UN mission to the supervision of compliance with military agreements, South Africa continued its mistakes, claiming that the mandate of Minurso concerns the organization of a referendum, an option completely rejected by the Security Council since 2001.
The New Zimbabwe focused particularly on South Africa's attempts to instrumentalize the Coronavirus pandemic, which spares no country, when it tried to call for extending the Secretary-General's global ceasefire appeal to the Moroccan Sahara.
The South African delegation, in doing so, seems to ignore that no bullet has been fired in the Moroccan Sahara since 1991, said the portal, adding that it is deplorable to see South Africa trying to exploit the Coronavirus, a trajedy that affects all humanity, including the people of South Africa.
In these times of extreme global distress, the world must act in unison to show compassion and solidarity while avoiding any manipulation that could hinder joint action against the pandemic, the newspaper said.
