The convention was signed at the headquarters of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, by the Ambassador of the Kingdom in France, Chakib Benmoussa, and the Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe Bjorn Berge, in the presence of the Consul General of Morocco in the Alsatian city Driss El Kaissi.
On this occasion, Benmoussa handed over the original full powers to Berge.
Morocco actively participated in the negotiation of this Convention, which provides a legal framework for cooperation in the search for effective joint responses to the challenges posed by the manipulation of sports competitions and other reprehensible practices in this area.
According to a statement by the Consulate General of the Kingdom in Strasbourg, the signing of this instrument is likely to allow Morocco to reaffirm its commitment to contribute to the preservation of the values of ethics and integrity, as well as its commitment to the application of the principles of good sports governance.
The "Macolin Convention" provides for a wide range of normative and operational mechanisms in nine chapters relating to prevention, law enforcement, international cooperation and information exchange, as well as monitoring and evaluation mechanisms.
This Convention, which is the only international law standard on the manipulation of sports competitions, entered into force on September 1, 2019. It has been signed by 30 European States, as well as Australia and has been ratified by 7 States, namely: Greece, Italy, Norway, Portugal, the Republic of Moldova, Switzerland and Ukraine.
It is open for signature by non-member States having participated in its elaboration or having observer status with the Council of Europe, as well as by other non-member States.
