In an opinion piece published in the Chilean daily El Periodista, Roberto Leon, also President of the Chile-Morocco Global Foundation, pointed out that the instructions given by HM the King in the first hours after the earthquake were decisive in mobilizing various civilian and military teams to search for victims and evacuate the injured.
Major human and logistical resources, both airborne and ground-based, were deployed, and field hospitals were set up in the Al Haouz region, the epicenter of the earthquake, noted Roberto Leon.
His Majesty the King's visit to the Marrakech University Hospital to check on the state of health of the injured and to donate blood is testimony to His full solidarity, concern and close monitoring of the situation of the victims and their families, added the Chilean expert.
According to Roberto Leon, Morocco is currently in deep mourning, but also experiencing one of its most moving human moments.
The earthquake highlighted the values of solidarity that are deeply rooted in the Moroccan people, wrote the former Chilean MP, pointing out that volunteers and civil society players mobilized to collect aid: food, mattresses, tents and various supplies, to be transported to the stricken areas. In Moroccan cities, long queues formed near hospitals for blood donations.
This tragedy, noted Roberto Leon, revealed to the world the pride of belonging to a Nation and a Homeland, the Kingdom of Morocco.
"It's very moving to see the solidarity of the Moroccan people. It's an example that should be part of humanity's intangible heritage," he concluded.
