International traffic grew by 19% to 11,135,210 passengers, while domestic traffic rose by 18% to 1,218,286 passengers, according to a press release from ONDA.
The development of international traffic was boosted by the creation of several new international air routes serving Morocco's airports, the same source reported, citing Marrakech: Leeds Bradford (UK), Tangier: Lisbon and Barcelona, Rabat: Istanbul, Barcelona, Paris CDG, Brussels and Basel Mulhouse (Switzerland), Tetouan: Amsterdam and Bilbao and Casablanca: Abidjan.
Airport movements reached 90,738, up by around 14% compared with the end of May 2023.
Cargo traffic totalled 39,655 tonnes in the first five months of 2024, up 27% on the same period a year earlier.
In May 2024 alone, Moroccan Airports recorded a commercial traffic volume of 2,827,570 passengers, a sharp increase of 20% on the same month in 2023.
Mohammed V International Airport, which accounts for 31% of overall traffic, welcomed 869,278 passengers, up 4% on May 2023. Likewise, most other airports posted strong growth, notably Rabat-Salé (+48%), Agadir Al Massira (+40%), Marrakech-Menara (+34%), Tangier Ibn Batouta (+33%), Oujda Angads (+14%) and Fez Saïss (+9%).
