The AU's PSC "reiterates its request to the AU Commission to put in place systems for the collection, analysis and management of data and statistics on refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) so as to register them in order to improve decision-making on their situation and the overall efficiency of humanitarian actions in Africa", said the Council in a press release issued on Monday following its meeting on June 19 at ministerial level on "refugees, internally displaced persons and humanitarian aid in Africa."
This meeting of the PSC confirms, once again, the Council's commitment to remain seized of humanitarian issues in Africa, in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Protocol relating to the establishment of the Peace and Security Council, particularly Article 7, which, in its first paragraph, mandates supporting and facilitating humanitarian action in cases of armed conflict or serious natural disasters, stressed the Moroccan delegation at this session.
During this meeting, the Moroccan delegation recalled the active solidarity advocated by HM King Mohammed VI in Africa as the basis of the conduct structuring Morocco's humanitarian commitment.
Invariably centered on African citizens, this commitment is based on an approach based on many security, humanitarian and ecological challenges facing Africa, the Moroccan delegation reaffirmed, highlighting Morocco’s actions to support refugee registration operations around the world.
In the context of sharing responsibility, the Moroccan delegation recalled the Kingdom’s financial contributions to support UNHCR's registration and documentation operations, following the 2nd World Refugee Forum in 2023 in Geneva and during the 1st edition of the Forum, where Morocco co-sponsored the "Protection Capacity" theme.
The Moroccan delegation highlighted support for registration as a key tool for protecting refugees, a guarantee of protection systems’ integrity and an essential indicator in the evaluation of humanitarian aid intended for refugees.
