This far-sighted vision stems from Morocco's strong conviction of water's vital importance as one of the most fundamental strategic resources, he explained to MAP, welcoming the relevance of the speech delivered by the Sovereign on the occasion of the Throne Day, particularly in relation to the water issue and the major structuring projects undertaken by the Kingdom in this sector.
He added that since "the control and management of water are major aspects of any State's policy, the Kingdom of Morocco does not bypass these imperatives", regretting that figures show the Kingdom is hardly immune to the problem of water stress and the increasing scarcity of water resources.
"This natural handicap, combined with drought, the impact of climate change and growth as well as the high demand for water resources, among others, have resulted in a low water supply and could lead to water stress, as witnessed already in rural areas", he said.
It is in this context that HM King Mohammed VI has placed the issue of water deficit at the heart of His priorities through a strategic vision supported by a proactive water policy, he said.
The Ivorian expert recalled the directives given to remedy the situation, in particular the urgent and innovative measures taken, the reinforcement of the 2020-2027 National Program for Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation, with the aim of ensuring coverage of at least 80% of irrigation needs in the country.
"To this end, the project of HM King Mohammed VI, based on a strategic and proactive vision of water resources, aims to speed up the implementation of major water transfer projects between water basins", he continued, highlighting the importance of the upcoming Casablanca seawater desalination mega project, the largest of the kind in Africa and the second largest in the world.
This proactive policy is meant to shift Morocco from a situation of water stress to complete food security by 2030, he concluded.
