"The keen interest we take in the situation prevailing in the country does not mean we are oblivious of, or insensitive to, the tragedy befalling our Palestinian brothers and sisters," Akhannouch said, quoting from His Majesty's speech on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of His accession to the Throne, in which the Sovereign affirms that Morocco places the Palestinian question on the same level as its national cause.
In his speech, delivered in the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita, and Morocco's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN, Omar Hilale, the Head of Government said that Morocco joins other Arab and Muslim countries in expressing its deep concern at the dangerous and unprecedented conditions in the occupied Palestinian territories since October 2023, which have taken a heavy toll in human lives and property damage, in flagrant violation of international law.
If putting an end to the hostilities in Gaza is an urgent priority, as stated by His Majesty the King, this must be achieved concurrently with opening up political prospects conducive to a just and lasting peace in the region, the official said.
Still quoting from the Royal Speech, Akhannouch added that opting for negotiations to revive the peace process between the Palestinian and Israeli sides requires cutting off the path for extremists—from whatever side they may come.
The third parameter of this Royal Vision, he stated, is that achieving complete security and stability in the region can be realized only within the framework of the two-state solution, with Gaza an integral part of the territory of the independent Palestinian state and East Jerusalem its capital.
In His capacity as Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), His Majesty the King has ordered the unprecedented deployment by land of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, said Akhannouch in his address to the high-level segment of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.
Referring to the current escalation in the Middle East, the Head of Government said that Morocco was concerned by the unprecedented situation on the ground and by the risk of extending the conflict zone and plunging the entire region into a cycle of great uncertainty.
He indicated that for HM the King, the absence of any prospect of a political settlement to the Palestinian question is one of the main causes of the escalation of tensions underway in the Middle East.
The Head of Government expressed Morocco's full solidarity with the Lebanese government and people in the face of the aggression to which they are being subjected, recalling the imperative need to respect the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of this brotherly country.
