The new station attests to the royal willingness to see new tourist hubs emerge in the Kingdom as well as the keen interest the Sovereign takes in the tourism sector in general as a powerful lever to promote labour and develop national assets, and to domestic tourism which provides an opportunity for Moroccans to better know their country.
The Mehdia resort, intended to strengthen the accommodation capacity of this popular destination for domestic tourists, falls within the scope of the royal determination to promote domestic tourism, reflected in the royal message to the participants in the seventh Tourism Conference, held in 2007 in Fez, in which the Sovereign had stressed that domestic tourism "contributes to the well-being of our citizens" and "gives them the opportunity to discover the many riches of their country and to be proud of all it has to offer."
The new station is due for completion within 42 months on a total area of 23 ha for a budget of 380 million dirhams.
With an accommodation capacity of 5,580 beds, the resort will include hotel residences (bungalows) and apartments, residential buildings for tourism promotion, real estate residences, a camping meeting international standards, a waterpark, sports fields, a water sports club, restaurants, shops and public facilities (mosques, administrations).
It will eventually generate about 700 direct jobs and thousands of indirect jobs, while meeting the expectations and socio-cultural specificities of Moroccan households who prefer travelling in a family environment with activities for children at affordable prices.
The new station consolidates the momentum of the "Biladi" plan, one of the structuring programmes falling within the scope of Tourism Vision 2020, which aims to meet the needs of domestic tourists by offering them a product matching their travel habits.
Besides the Mehdia resort, seven more are planned as part of the plan, namely Ifrane resort (already operational), Sidi El Abed near El Jadida, Ras El Maa in Nador, Imi Ouaddar near Agadir, Oued El Maleh in Benslimane, as well as those planned in Tangier and Marrakech.
The "Biladi" Plan also provides for setting up a dozen "Biladi Clubs" throughout the Kingdom.
