During virtual talks with Moroccan minister of Energy, Mining and Environment, Aziz Rabbah, the British official and president of COP26 congratulated the Kingdom on its achievements during the organization and the presidency of COP22 in 2016.
For his part, Rabbah stressed the need to focus on the monitoring and evaluation of the promising initiatives launched since COP22, including those of the Congo Basin, the Sahel and access to energy, and to increase efforts to advance multilateral negotiations in order to have a clear and comprehensive vision ahead of COP26.
Highlighting the importance of coordination with the African Union as a regional organization, the Minister noted that the 26th session of the Climate Conference must be a turning point towards real and tangible progress, particularly in terms of funding, said a press release from the ministry.
Rabbah also underlined the need to pay more attention to countries in recession following the Covid-19 pandemic and the links between the Covid-19 pandemic and climate change.
During these talks, the two officials discussed the commitment of developed countries to mobilise jointly USD 100 billion a year in climate finance, as well as the role of the United Kingdom and international organizations in supporting African countries in funding and technical expertise.
The two sides expressed the hope that the strategic partnership between Morocco and the United Kingdom will be an opportunity to develop concrete actions in the fight against global warming.
