Algeria Is Living Tragic Political Situation (European Parliament)

Brussels - Algeria is living a tragic political situation with a lack of prospects and an increased degradation of human rights and freedoms, said Tuesday, several officials at the European Parliament.

During a debate within the Subcommittee on Human Rights, MEPs and observers pointed to the abuse of power in Algeria and a disastrous economic situation with an explosive unemployment rate.

They also spoke out against the waves of mass arrests of human rights defenders, journalists and civil society actors and against the omerta on corruption and the restrictions imposed by the Algerian authorities on religious freedom.

The European Parliament has adopted in less than a year two emergency resolutions on human rights violations and the situation of freedoms in Algeria.
